Media Security Engineer/Systems Engineer

The Disney Studios Distribution Technology team is working with cutting edge technologies, new consoles/devices/delivery mechanisms, and conditional access systems in support of the Studio’s emerging platforms and new technologies strategies centered around media distribution. We’re looking for somebody with an enthusiasm and curiosity for emerging technologies. The Media Security Systems Engineer reports into the Manager, Distribution Technology at The Walt Disney Studios and is based in Burbank. ResponsibilitiesOverall responsibilities

  • Independently perform hands-on evaluations of software, hardware and services related to media distribution
  • Document the results of these evaluations and effectively communicate the results and impact to the underlying technology strategy.
  • Maintain hardware, software and related equipment for use by the Distribution Technology team
  • Research and stay abreast of new technologies in media security, distribution and consumer devices


Specific responsibilities

  • Perform hands-on evaluation of specifically identified technologies – emerging technologies (4K, HDR, HFR, etc.), distribution technologies (IPTV, CAS, Internet OTT, etc.), consumer technologies (STBs, Game Consoles, software, etc.)
  • Evaluations to look at security, networking, storage, user interface/experience and usage rules
  • Participate in security reviews, threat modeling and breach investigations
  • Create and maintain test cases, scripts and custom test tools for evaluations
  • Precisely document findings from evaluations and author detailed reports to communicate the results to an internal audience
  • Install, setup and maintain hardware, software and networking equipment
  • Setup and maintain application servers
  • Author documentation such as environment diagrams, deployment guidelines and other documentation
  • Perform cutting-edge applied research on new attacks and present findings to an internal audience
  • Stay abreast of trends, products, frameworks, applications, threat landscape and provide concise summary of the findings to the team
  • Collaborate effectively with other technology teams across Studio Technology and provide security expertise/guidance

Basic Qualifications

  • BA/BS in Computer Science or related technical field or equivalent experience; MS in CS/Engineering a plus
  • 3 years experience with relevant IT and internet technology experience; implementing, administering, and supporting systems from development through production
  • 3 years experience programming in Object Oriented (OO) environment (Java, C++, etc.)
  • 2 years professional experience in media related engineering and system architecture
  • Good understanding of video distribution systems (OTT, Cable, Satellite, IPTV, etc.)
  • Good understanding of Digital Rights Management (DRM) based systems (e.g. Google Widevine, Microsoft PlayReady, Apple FairPlay, etc.)
  • Good understanding of mobile devices (iOS/Android) and three major gaming platforms
  • Proficient with installation and configuration of OSX, Windows and Linux based operating systems and networking equipment (e.g. switches, routers etc.)
  • Good understanding of network protocols and data delivery
  • Good understanding of security principles (PKI, RSA, etc.)
  • Solid knowledge of the security model on one or more platforms (e.g. browsers, mobile devices), cryptography, and network security.
  • Experience in the evaluation and /or the development of new technologies
  • Have an attacker mindset with a passion for breaking all the things unbreakableGood interpersonal and communication skills
  • Articulate technical analysis results with technical and non-technical people
  • Ability to multitask effectively
  • Action oriented with high standard for quality and performance
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to work autonomously
  • Enthusiasm & curiosity for emerging technologies


Preferred Qualifications

  • SSCP, CISSP, CEH certification is a plus
  • 2 years experience in one or more of the following areas - security engineering, application security and/or mobile security
  • Proven experience with network analysis tools (e.g. Wireshark, Fiddler, etc.)
  • Familiarity with security tools such as static analysis, runtime analysis, black-box testing (e.g. IDA Pro, Olly Dbg etc.)
