As part of the Post Production Engineering team supporting Disney Studio Operations, and as part of the entire Studio Technology team that supports The Walt Disney Studios, the role of the Y-4 Engineer must provide:

  • Provide proficient, high-level front-line, Tier-0 engineering design/implementation/maintenance/technical support for all post production activities associated with Studio Operations (i.e. the Digital Media Center and all ancillary departments {Title Graphics, Film Print} at The Walt Disney Studios.
  • Ensure that appropriate connectivity across The Walt Disney Studios, and our key production partners, is established, supporting pre-existing workflows aligned to Dailies, Digital Review, DCP creation and distribution, and/or scene and shot collaboration of VFX elements.
  • Collaborate effectively with other Technology teams (i.e. Studio Technology/Systems, Network and Storage Engineering) to ensure all Post Production activities in support of Studio Operations are handled in an expeditious/timely manner.
  • Participate in the design and support of ongoing enhanced physical and digital workflow processes and procedures tailored to the specific business needs of Studio Operations. Working knowledge of both manual and automated workflows is necessary.
  • Serve as key technical liaison(s) with 3rd party technical services providers (i.e. AVID, DVS/Rohde & Schwarz, ARRI, Isilon, HP, numerous others). This includes managing day-to-day service delivery, overall technical support and the maintenance of Service-Level-Agreements (SLAs), resource management and escalation policies, and all operational procedures and processes.
  • Collaborate and integrate with the other Y-4 Post Production Engineers who are designated to other operational areas.
  • Collaborate with Projection Engineering and our on-Lot media-integration wiring/cabling team (i.e. the 40 Shop) to ensure any efforts that involve multiple teams are handled in a timely and efficient and communicative manner.
  • Collaborate and closely align with additional Studio Technology engineering teams (i.e. Media Systems Engineering, Network Engineering, Storage Engineering, Software Engineering, etc.) to ensure a seamless, cohesive engineering approach is provided.


Union: Membership in the IATSE Local 700 Union required; if not currently a member, you will be required to join.
Hours: late shift working to 10:00 PM
Responsibilities

  • SYSTEMS ENGINEERING & SYSTEMS ADMINISTRATION:
    1. Large-Scale systems integration with the following media systems and shared storage
    2. Knowledge of local attached, fiber attached, and networked file systems (e.g. NFS, SMB, AFP, DFS, NTFS)
    3. Extensive knowledge in the configuration and support of log servers, fileservers, license servers, scripting servers, terminal servers, and any specialized servers necessary in a post production environment
    4. Extensive knowledge of data transport tools (e.q. Signiant, Faspex, Aspera), including how to debug problems in this area. Ability to support High-Availability systems in this arena a plus
    5. Expert knowledge of operating system administration (e.g., Windows/XP, Unix/Linux, and Macintosh), with the ability to configure both server and desktop systems from “shrink-wrap” to a fully operational and secured state
    6. Extensive knowledge of systems hardware (e.g., firewalls, uninterruptible power supplies, miscellaneous servers, and disk and tape libraries (particularly LTO/LTFS)
    7. Knowledge and understanding and ability to use Script-based tools (perl, Python, Tcl/Tk, csh, ksh, ruby, Chef/Puppet, etc.)
    8. Experience supporting a large Render Farm with the associated Queueing packages

    STORAGE SYSTEMS:

    1. Expert knowledge of large-scale clustered storage technologies (e.q. Isilon), with a proven history supporting a multi-tiered file system
    2. Expert knowledge of large-scale SAN technologies, Quantum Stornext, Avid ISIS/Nexis, CIFS.
  • APPLICATION ENGINEERING:
    1. Extensive knowledge in the configuration of (including end-user client support) the following:
      1. Apple Final Cut Pro
      2. Adobe CC
      3. AVID Media Composer, Avid ISIS & Nexis, with AVID ACSR Certification a plus
      4. Nuke or other node based compositors.
      5. Tweak/VFX Playback and other review and approval systems.
      6. Encoding and Transcoding methodologies (i.e. Digital Rapids, Carbon Coder, Telestream)
      7. Maya and 3D Studio Max
      8. ProTools
      9. Forensic watermarking systems Nexguard/Civolution
      10. IMD and DCP DCP Creation & QC platforms (Wailua DCP, Transkoder, Clipster)
      11. Baton QC
  • POST PRODUCTION INFRASTRUCTURE EXPERIENCE:
    1. Experience using and supporting Waveform monitors, Scopes, and Video/Audio Generators
    2. Knowledge of Video routing systems.
    3. Experience calibrating display systems.
    4. Experience with digital video signal chain, distribution systems and components (i.e. SDI Video DA’s, video extenders, video converters, etc.)
    5. Experience configuring and supporting distributed KVM systems -- Avocent HMX preferred.
    6. Familiarity with setting up remote review systems such as TVIPs sessions, or comparable transport stream multiplexing/switching sessions over IP
    7. Familiarity with supporting Digital Dailies and data management systems (i.e. PIX, Fifth Kind, etc.)


Basic Qualifications

  1. Knowledge of color science, color pipelines, and color management systems.
  2. Expertise with DCP and IMF workflows
  3. Extensive knowledge encoded video formats (i.e. ProRes , JPEG2000, HEVC, H264, MPEG2 Transport, DPX, XYZ TIFF, exr, Camera Raw, etc.)
  4. Understanding of Stereoscopic Video principles
  5. Extensive knowledge of monitor and display technologies (i.e. Plasma, LCD, OLED, 2D/3D, etc.)
  6. Understanding of contemporary and emerging sound technologies, formats and standards: Dolby Digital, Dolby ATMOS, DTS-X, A/85, R128.
  7. Knowledge with systems tools, protocols and profiling packages (e.g. SNMP, OpenView, Nagios, iperf, Zabbix)
  8. Ability to effectively participate in the following ongoing, daily activities:
    1. When required, effectively provide Project Planning, including a full delineation of subtasks, bill-of-materials, time/labor components, etc., including the ability to re-prioritizing when needed
    2. Ability to effectively Track projects providing additional details when required
    3. Provide timely updates to all pre-existing Incident and Management Tracking Systems in use by Studio Operations and Studio Technology
    4. Project Planning, tracking, and reporting and incident management tracking
  • Local 700 (IATSE) represented position
  • Experience in post production engineering or front-end user support, preferably in a post production facility, live-action, visual effects, DI or animation production setting
  • Excellent customer-service orientation and understanding of the nuances of post production support
  • Able to multitask in a highly complex, diverse, production environment
  • Able to quickly prioritize decisions given, oftentimes, incomplete and conflicting knowledge
  • Highly self-directed, being able to both manage and (re)prioritize the multiple concurrent and competing challenges, issues, ambiguities, and contradictions that, inevitably, occur when supporting post production.
  • Ability to assist in prioritization across a team of Y-4 Engineers, ensuring a true esprit-‘d-corps mindset is maintained across the team
  • Strong analytical problem solving skills
