Web Developer

LOCATIONS:

WDP&R Technology Services is responsible for researching, implementing and managing technologies to support the changing needs of WDP&R Communications & Public Affairs; including, but not limited to online and video platforms. WDP&R Technology Services works to continually improve the existing technologies available to the Communications & Public Affairs division while working to introduce new technologies that make work easier and more efficient. Responsibilities
The Web Developer supports the Technology and Video Services Manager by executing various technical operations at a tactical level. Primarily, the Web Developer will be responsible for helping to develop software as needed by clients of WDP&R Public Affairs. The Web Developer frequently works directly with Technology Specialists in support of WDP&R Public Affairs projects. The Web Developer occasionally works with other technical groups within The Walt Disney Company upon whose services the WDP&R Shared Services relies (this includes services like SiteMinder, Keystone, DCS, etc.) This position primarily requires software development experience in the areas of PHP, Database (MySQL), and JavaScript/CSS. The Web Developer must have experience with maintaining code, databases, change management workflows, and the software development lifecycle (including the QA process) and some DevOps experience. A deep understanding of the digital media development and operations is essential. This role will support multiple projects simultaneously and must be able to transition through many different tasks and topics in a given day. This role will involve various discovery, support, and technical tasks such as:

  • Developing software to achieve solutions outlined by members of the WDP&R Technology Services team
  • Enhancing, improving and otherwise making more efficient new and existing software systems
  • Helping to define and ensuring WDP&R Technology Services best practices are followed for performance, maintenance and security standards
  • Writing and reviewing documentation for code, functionality and WDP&R Technology Services standards & processes
  • Working with WDP&R Technology Services standard tools such as GitHub, Rundeck, Confluence, Jira and Chef
  • Assisting with CMS maintenance and upgrades as necessary
  • Reviewing new tools for adoption and 3rd party code for best practices
  • Updating site content as needed for WDP&R Technology Services customers

Basic Qualifications

  • 3+ years PHP code experience
  • 3+ years experience with CSS and JavaScript
  • 3+ years Experience with MySQL
  • 2+ years experience WordPress / Drupal theme and plugin / module development
  • Experience in consulting or agency environment
  • PHP, JavaScript, SQL Database, CSS, HTML, UNIX/Linux, Windows, OSX
  • Experience with enterprise technology services • Mastery of implementing responsive site design
  • Deep understanding of object oriented JavaScript methodologies (such as closures and namespacing)
  • Significant experience working with jQuery and related libraries
  • Extensive knowledge of desktop (IE 8+, Chrome, Safari, Firefox) on Mac OS X and Windows, and mobile browsers (iOS, Android)
  • Experience working with HTML 5
  • Experience providing time estimates and then delivering functionality to meet the deadlines
  • Experience using Git / GitHub as a source code repository
  • Experience using industry standard task & bug tracking software
  • A demonstrated understanding of Web development security concerns and best practices
  • Comfortable navigating a linux filesystem over SSH
  • Ability to implement web service APIs, XML and REST
  • Ability to debug and diagnose software issues
  • Familiarity with performance optimization concepts/best practices including caching, CDN, load testing
  • Basic understanding of User and Web Interaction principles
  • Ability to adapt to rapidly shifting priorities in fast-paced environment, including switching between multiple task/projects in the same day
  • Ability to collaborate and communicate within a cross-functional team including managers, technical leads and system engineers Professional demeanor and positive attitude

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5+ years PHP code experience
  • 5+ years experience with CSS and JavaScript
  • 5+ years Experience with MySQL
  • 3+ years experience WordPress theme and plugin development
  • Experience working with PHP frameworks, such as Laravel and Zend
  • Devops experience
  • Experience with cloud computing platforms such as AWS
  • Experience with SEO
  • Experience with registration/authentication services
  • Understanding of COPPA requirements
  • Understanding of sensitive/restricted data handling such as PII, PCI, Safe Harbor, SOX
  • Understanding of PGP/GPG encryption
  • Experience in a complex, large-company environment
  • Add proven experience with content syndication and aggregation via web service APIs, XML, JSON, and REST
